Atlanta, GA, December 10, 2009--The GREENGUARD Environmental Instituteannounced that USFloors, Inc. has achieved the first-ever GREENGUARD Certification for a complete line of bamboo flooring. Though bamboo flooring has long been considered a sustainable choice because it is a rapidly renewable material, it now helps create healthier indoor environments by meeting the stringent chemical emissions standards of the GREENGUARD Certification Program(SM).

NABE Economists Boost Forecast

Washington, DC, November 23, 2009--A group of business economists boosted their forecast for economic growth over the next year, but said the jobless rate will remain stubbornly high, a survey released on Monday showed.

The National Association for Business Economists predicted real growth in gross domestic product for 2010 would be 2.9 percent, up from its October forecast for 2.6 percent growth.

"Real GDP growth should also be enough to recover losses from the recession and return output to an all-time high by the end of 2010," the business group said in a statement.

For all of 2009, the business group predicted the economy would contract by 2.4 percent, slightly improved from its October forecast for contraction of 2.5 percent.

The survey reflected a poll of 48 NABE members from October 24-November 5.

The group saw the jobless rate holding at an average 10 percent from the fourth quarter of 2009 to the second quarter of 2010 before dropping to 9.6 percent by the end of 2010.

"While the recovery has been jobless so far, that should soon change," said NABE President Lynn Reaser. "Within the next few months, companies should be adding instead of cutting jobs."

Employers have shed 7.3 million jobs since December 2007 when the recession began; the jobless rate last month jumped to 10.2 percent, a 26-1/2 year high.

The survey found that most of the group's economists were mostly optimistic that the Federal Reserve's polices will not lead to higher inflation, NABE said.

The panel expects the core personal consumption expenditures deflator to rise 1.5 percent in 2010, following an identical gain in 2009.

Inflation will remain low mostly because of substantial labor slack and further productivity gains will reduce labor costs, the business group said.

Government spending will likely grow at a 2 percent pace in 2010 because of fiscal stress at the state and local levels, the survey showed.

The personal saving rate is expected to average 4 percent in 2010, the highest rate since 1998, the group said.

Mohawk Ranked in Newsweek’sTop 500 Green Companies

Dalton, GA, October 6, 2009--Mohawk Industries has been recognized as one of the greenest companies in the U.S., according to a just-released ranking by Newsweek Magazine.

Newsweek listed Mohawk 227th in its “Green Rankings 2009.” For over a year, the publication collaborated with leading environmental researchers KLD Research & Analytics, Trucost, and CorporateRegister.com to rank the 500 largest U.S. companies based on their actual environmental performance, policies, and reputation.

Mohawk was the only flooring company to make the Newsweek list.

“This is a remarkable honor for Mohawk Industries, and a milestone in our Mohawk GreenWorks efforts,” said Jeff Lorberbaum, CEO. “This is acknowledgement of the work and resources we have invested in Mohawk GreenWorks, and it sets a standard by which we can measure the next steps in our program.”

Companies were scored using three key criteria:

Environmental Impact Score, a standardized quantitative performance measurement taking more than 700 variables into account to captures the total cost of all environmental impacts of a corporation's global operations.

Green Policies Score, an analytical assessment of a company's environmental policies and performance, which considered best-in-class policies, programs and initiatives, as well as regulatory infractions, lawsuits and community impacts, among other indicators.

Reputation Score, based on an opinion survey of corporate social responsibility (CSR) professionals, academics and other environmental experts. CEOs or high-ranking officials in all companies on the Newsweek 500 list were also invited to participate.

Impressively, in addition to its overall ranking, Mohawk ranked 45th in reputation among the Top 500 and 14th in its product category, “Consumer Products, Cars.”

“We’re particularly pleased with our reputation ranking, since it comes from other organizations, and from individuals who have special expertise in sustainability,” Lorberbaum said.

Rhino No Match for SmartStrand

Birmingham, AL, September 1, 2009--The grudge match is over and the winner has been crowned in the battle between Mohawk SmartStrand carpet made with DuPont Sorona renewably sourced polymer, and Ricko The Rhino. The beige carpet emerged victorious in the SmartStrand Rhino Challenge... after two weeks of exposure to Ricko, the 2,800 pound black rhinoceros, the SmartStrand triexta carpeting came clean.
This revolutionary carpet stood up to everything Ricko the Rhino could dish out: the constant tracking in of mud, dirt, and even nastier stains, as well as being trampled on by the animal who weighs in at a staggering 1-1/2 tons.
"I never had a doubt," said David Duncan, Mohawk's Vice President of Marketing. "SmartStrand's stain resistance and durability is no match for any stain-maker, whether it's a rhinoceros or your own pets."
After more than 14 days, the light-colored carpet showed some severe staining. The Birmingham Zoo's Ricko, a 12-year-old, Eastern Black Rhinoceros, soiled the carpet in many ways. In the last two weeks, a tropical storm had passed through the Birmingham area, forcing the very muddy rhinoceros into spend an extended amount of time in his enclosure for safety reasons. It was during that time Ricko generated some of his most difficult stains.
"To be honest, I didn't expect it to come so clean," said Billy Cochran, a zookeeper who helps care for Ricko. Billy witnessed the cleaning by a crew from Issis & Sons Carpet, a Mohawk Floorscapes retailer from nearby Pelham, AL. "This carpet was really a mess but now the cleaned sections look like new," Cochran said.
Using only hot-water extraction and Mohawk FloorCare Essentials Carpet Stain Remover, the dingy, dirty spots washed away. Time-lapse video from the cleaning will be provided later this week in updates on SmartStrandChallenge.com and YouTube.com/MohawkFloors.
"We used the same formula, at the same strength, available to every consumer who purchases Mohawk FloorCare Essentials from their local retailer," Duncan said. "Because this was designed to be a true test of our carpet, we didn't clean it using any extraordinary means. And it didn't need anything outside the norm because SmartStrand triexta proved itself to be that amazingly stain resistant."
The entire piece of carpeting was not cleaned. As will be visible on the video, sections of carpet were selected for "before and after" displays so that the clean sections would be clearly identifiable.
"We tried to choose areas where you could see a distinct muddy footprint," said Bart Rich, Mohawk's Director of Brand Management. "It will be the same piece of carpet, just half of it cleaned and the other half not so you can see the distinct different."
During the two weeks experiment, one of four webcams broadcast the adventures of Ricko the Rhino living on carpeting live at SmartStrandChallenge.com. During that time, tens of thousands of visitors witnessed every stain and stomp by the Rhino. A Facebook page for Ricko also garnered thousands of fans who became friends of the Rhino.
"Sure gonna miss watching you play around," wrote one fan. Another asked, "Are you just going to go away now that the carpet's gone?"
Ricko the Rhino's Facebook postings will continue, promised Michael Cheek, Mohawk's Manager of Internet Technology. "We've got a lot more to hear from Ricko and the SmartStrand Challenge."
SmartStrandChallenge.com will continue to be updated with videos, as will Mohawk's YouTube.com account. A highlight video from thousands of hours of webcam footage will be assembled for posting along with a wrap-up showing the entire project, Cheek said. There are currently less than 500 Eastern Black Rhinos left in the wild and Mohawk is committed to helping Ricko's brothers and sisters. To support rhinoceros conservation efforts, SmartStrandChallenge.com will continue selling the popular "Save the Black Rhino" t-shirts and "Ricko the Rhino" stuffed animals. Profits from both products will be used to benefit The Birmingham Zoo and the International Rhino Foundation.

Builder Confidence Rises In August

Washington, DC, August 17, 2009--Builder confidence in the market for newly built, single-family homes rose one point in August to its highest level in more than a year, according to the latest reading of the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI), released today. Building on a two-point gain in July, the HMI reached 18 this month, its highest point since June of 2008.
“Home builder expectations have been buoyed by the success of the first-time home buyer tax credit and its anticipated boost to buying activity leading up to the Nov. 30 expiration date,” said NAHB Chairman Joe Robson, a home builder from Tulsa, Okla. “The question is what happens after that – whether there will be enough momentum to keep us moving toward a recovery, particularly in light of significant headwinds such as the severe credit crunch for housing production loans and inappropriate appraisal practices that are scuttling a quarter of all new-home sales. Unless Congress and the Administration focus their attention on housing right now, this improvement may well be short-lived,” he said.
“One very positive aspect of today’s report is the big gain registered in the component gauging home builders’ expectations for the next six months,” noted NAHB Chief Economist David Crowe. “This reflects anticipated sales stemming from the tax credit as well as recent signs that an economic recovery has begun. There is definitely a sense of hope among builders that the worst of the downturn is over and that a turning point is near at hand. Meaningful action by Congress could ensure that this upward momentum continues and that housing can help push the economy back onto solid ground.”
NAHB is calling on Congress to extend the first-time home buyer tax credit for another year and to offer it to all income-eligible buyers. In addition, NAHB is urging Congress to help eliminate the credit crunch, correct faulty appraisal practices and expand Net Operating Loss tax provisions that can help avoid more layoffs. Each of these actions would generate thousands of new jobs and provide a much-needed boost to economic recovery.

Putting Triexta to the Test

BLACK RHINO TESTS CARPET FOR DURABILITY AND STAIN RESISTANCE

Birmingham, Ala. – Mohawk Industries (Mohawk) has teamed with The Birmingham Zoo to put its SmartStrand® with DuPont™ Sorona® (SmartStrand) carpet to the mightiest of durability and stain resistance tests. On August 14, Mohawk will install SmartStrand triexta carpet in the indoor enclosure of The Birmingham Zoo’s only Eastern Black Rhinoceros, leaving it there for two weeks.

Study: Hard Surface Demand to Increase

Cleveland, OH, July 29, 2009--Demand for hard surface flooring products in the United States is forecast to increase 4.6 percent annually from a weak 2008 base to 9.6 billion square feet in 2013, valued at $12 billion. Growth will show renewed strength, mostly due to an expected recovery in the economy in general, and in new housing construction in particular. Hard surface flooring is expected to gain market share from carpeting, an ongoing trend for the past decade. Demand will be driven by growing consumer preference for high-end products such as wood, laminates and ceramic tile, as well as increasing interest in natural and environmentally responsible products such as natural stone, engineered wood, linoleum, cork and bamboo. Vinyl will continue to account for a declining share of total hard surface flooring demand, but will remain a major flooring product. These and other trends, including market share and product segmentation, are presented in Hard Surface Flooring, a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industry research firm.

The greatest growth opportunities through 2013 will continue to be in laminate flooring. However, gains will begin to decelerate relative to the 1998-2008 growth rate, as laminate’s market penetration approaches its upper limits.

Above average gains will also be posted by wood flooring, particularly engineered wood flooring. Prospects for ceramic tile flooring will match overall growth, while demand for vinyl flooring will lag overall gains. New products, such as bamboo, cork and eucalyptus flooring, as well as other materials which can present a favorable environmental profile, will continue to enjoy particularly good growth prospects, although they will remain relatively small niche products.

The cost of hard surface flooring products is expected to continue to increase through 2013. Price hikes are expected to accelerate for laminate flooring, reflecting reduced imports of lower priced products. In the case of vinyl flooring, however, costs for crude oil (an important raw material in vinyl flooring production) are anticipated to soften from the high levels of 2008, which will alleviate pressure on manufacturers to raise prices. Value gains will be supported by trends toward luxury flooring products such as exotic woods.

Approves New Generic Subclass for PTT
It’s revolutionary, it’s innovative, it’s distinctive and now it’s official. On Friday, March 20th, the FTC approved “triexta” as the new generic sub-class for PTT. Triexta is the new standard in carpet fiber. Mohawk has been praising the performance attributes of PTT since the introduction of SmartStrand® in 2004, so naturally we are very pleased to see that PTT is officially recognized as a superior fiber.
In early 2006, Mohawk Industries and DuPont jointly petitioned the FTC to establish a new generic fiber subclass name under the existing classification of “polyester” for the PTT category (Polytrimethylene Terephthalate). Mohawk currently sells PTT under two umbrellas; SmartStrand® and SmartStrand® with DuPont ™ Sorona® renewably sourced polymer. This
ruling is significant, and historic for the carpet industry. This is the first extension that the FTC has approved for textiles in 5 years and the first extension for residential carpeting in 50 years (since nylon was established under the Textile Fiber Act in June 1959).

The FTC required 3 criteria to be proven for a subclass name to be granted:
1) Has the same general chemical composition as an established generic fiber category.
2) Has distinctive properties of importance to the general public as a result of a new method of manufacture or substantially differentiated physical characteristics, such as fiber structure.
3) The distinctive feature(s) make the fiber suitable for uses for which other fibers under the established generic name would not be suited, or would be significantly less well suited.
This petition was necessary. (Retailers) told us that having these clearly superior products in the same fiber category as PET was misleading to consumers, restrictive, and severely limiting to the new and superior product’s marketability. SmartStrand® carpets have gained tremendous market share in a few short years. The demand for these revolutionary and improved carpets continues to increase and consumer satisfaction is high. This FTC ruling clarifies any misleading issues (retailers) may have experienced relative to PET carpets.

This landmark ruling confirms what (retailers) have been telling us; that SmartStrand® is not PET polyester, it’s triexta and it’s just better™. Triexta represents a new class of fiber; a new standard in carpet; one that sets a new, higher bar in performance. SmartStrand® carpets will be labeled 100% Triexta, and they will stand out on the showroom floor.

Housing Starts Up 3.6% in June

Washington, DC, July 17, 2009--Housing starts rose 3.6 percent in June to an annual rate of 582,000 and their highest level since November, following a revised 562,000 pace in May, according to the Commerce Department. Building permits climbed 8.7 percent to a 563,000 annual rate, the highest level of the year.
Economists were expecting a drop in starts to a 530,000 pace.
Construction of single-family homes jumped 14 percent, the biggest gain since December 2004, to a 470,000 rate. The fourth consecutive increase brought single-family starts to the highest level since October. Starts on multifamily homes dropped 26 percent after surging 66 percent in May.
Combined sales of existing and new homes climbed to a 5.1 million annual rate in May, the highest level so far this year.
Home starts were down 46 percent from a year earlier and are down from a peak annual rate of 2.27 million in January 2006, which capped the biggest housing boom in six decades.
